“Charilus the grim, Charilus the ill-humoured, when is that old man ever gunna smile…” Fred, inkeeper of the Boar’s Head Inn.
Charilus is a powerful mage who has devoted himself to acedemic pursuits until he discovered knowledge of the Masks of Destiny.
Charilus is a self-made man, he came from common folk but fought to find his place in this world. He succeeded at magic where even his teachers assumed he would fail. His fierce drive to win allowed him little time for a social life. Eventually he came to the realization that despite all his success he hated the attention of others. He longed for the simple life he once had. So he retired more or less. He retreated to the life of an acedemic.
After some time of this he again felt that something was missing, companionship. He approached this like he did all other things, with efficiency. He observed all the local women for one who might make a proper wife (i.e. servant) but found that none could put up with his surliness or demanding nature. One woman Elsanore managed to find a small bit of warmth and friendliness in him so agreed to marry him. They lived this way for many years and had 1 son named Callan. Callan joined the church and became a paladin. Charilus was proud of his son’s accomplishments and chides himself to this day for not having told him that.
Callan eventually married another paladin of his order. When the Arch-Magi Xoth influenced Charilus into discovering the knowledge of the Masks of Destiny, it was Callan and his wife who first searched for them.
They were ambushed and killed by someone unknown, someone who also stole the unidentifed mask they had discovered, that was 13 years ago. Charilus wished vengance but knew that the masks were a great threat to all that lived. He dotes on his granddaughter now that his wife too has passed, and occassionally he finds some useful bit of information concerning the masks that he passes along to his servant Omar or perhaps the party.
